Ross McKenzie

ross-mckenzieGrowing up on a farming property in One Tree Hill, Ross was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1944 and spent his 8th birthday in Hospital, where he was taught how to manage insulin. With the support of his uncle who also had type 1 diabetes, Ross learnt the importance of diet, regular meals and monitoring his blood sugar levels.

Ross sheared sheep and worked extensively throughout the region for twenty years. The shearing shed schedule allowed for regular breaks, which made it easier to manage the requirements of his diabetes.

Ross was a keen sportsman who enjoyed tennis, cricket, table tennis and golf. He was able to manage his condition through regular testing and the help and support of family, friends and team members. In 1973, Ross settled on a property in Victor Harbor where he managed a sheep and cereal farm with the help of his wife Fay and two daughters. Ross farmed the property for over 30 years, but at the age of 70, decided it was time to slow down and the farm was sold.

He and Fay retired to Barmera to be closer to their eldest daughter, her husband and three grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his family, exploring the area on his bike, attending Probus and playing some golf before moving into a care facility earlier this year due to ill health.

Ross lived a very happy and normal life as a person with diabetes and is proud of his life achievements and his family.
