Diabetes SA is proud to announce the Kellion Victory Medal Recipients for 2016/2017, including:

Anne Wright

50-Anne-WrightAfter many weeks of generally feeling unwell and tired, I was diagnosed with diabetes in October 1967, just after turning 15. I was in 3rd year at high school.

I was devastated when my GP told me that I probably would not be accepted as a student nurse because of diabetes. However, after completing 5th year high school, I was accepted as a student nurse at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

In reflection, shift work was not ideal when managing diabetes, but I provided some real life situations of managing hypoglycaemia for my work colleagues! It also got me out of night duty when I was a student midwife at KEMH in Perth.

After four years at RAH, I travelled around New Zealand on a working holiday for 18 months on my own.

Nursing took me to outback WA in 1978 to work in the Emergency Nursing Service for 12 months. It was while I as working at Kununurra Hospital I met my husband Keith, the town's pharmacist. He thought his training had given him an insight into diabetes, but 38 years of marriage and coping with three pregnancies and later memopause very much improved his knowledge!

I must thank him for always being there to support me, and my three boys became very adept at recognising symptoms of a hypo.

I sometimes think back about the changes in managing diabetes over 50 years and I would say that blood glucose monitors have had the greatest impact, followed by Flexi pens.

Testing one's urine and boiling the glass syringes are very much a thing of the past, thank goodness.

I would like to think that diabetes has guided my life rather than ruled it, just something I had lived with. There are many worse diseases that do impact others lives.

Thank you for the opportunity to receive the Kellion Victory Medal.
