World Diabetes Day 2015

Act Today To Change Tomorrow

World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on November 14. World Diabetes Day aims to engage millions of people worldwide in diabetes awareness.

The theme for World Diabetes Day 2015 'act today to change tomorrow' is all about highlighting the importance of healthy eating as a key factor in the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes.

The International Diabetes Federation advises that healthy eating:

  • Can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.
  • Is an important part of the effective management of all types of diabetes to help avoid diabetes-related complications.

Reducing 'free sugar' consumption

This year's campaign highlights the need to reduce 'free sugar' consumption to less than 10% of a person's total daily energy intake; this includes foods with added sugar as well as sugars that naturally occur in honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit concentrates.

Importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle

The campaign also aims to highlight the importance of enjoying a healthy diet rich in foods like fresh fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, lean meat, dairy, legumes, nuts and also clean drinking water. A healthy diet and lifestyle is very important in helping to manage type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes; as well as reduce a person's risk of type 2 diabetes and diabetes-related complications for all types of diabetes.

Preventing type 2 diabetes

The International Diabetes Federation estimates that up to 70% of type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented through the adoption of healthy lifestyles including eating well, exercising more and quitting smoking.
