2015 National Diabetes Week overviewNational Diabetes Week (12 – 18 July) aims to raise awareness of diabetes. This year's focus was on increasing the awareness and greater understanding of diabetes and its different types; and on understanding diabetes complications. Diabetes SA distributed well over 20,000 resources in total to health professionals leading up to the week to raise awareness about diabetes, and in fact had to undertake another print run of our highly successful brochure 'Diabetes Know Your Type'. A media release was distributed throughout the MediaNet network, addressing the importance of greater public understanding of the different types of diabetes, as 97% of people believe the majority of public still need to be educated and informed. Diabetes SA provided several radio interviews, including ABC 891 Adelaide, ABC North & West, and Flow FM Radio. A week leading to National Diabetes Week, Diabetes SA appeared on Our Time TV Show on Channel 44 Adelaide (and the segment was aired across Australia several times that week). Feedback from the Sprout cooking class was terrific - we have some lovely photos of the children cooking and having a great time. It was very encouraging to see Amelia talking to ABC3 News about what it is like to live with type 1 diabetes. The hearing checks went well in the Retail area, many members booked a hearing test and discussed the importance of ongoing management. Saturday saw the week end successfully with a great seminar 'Understanding Diabetes Complications'; this was well attended and the feedback on the day was overwhelmingly positive, with many people expressing their gratitude for Diabetes SA putting on such an event. A big thank you to all Diabates SA staff who worked hard over not just the last week, but weeks leading up to National Diabetes Week. And most of all, a big thank you to those who supported National Diabetes Week on social media and helped raise awareness about diabetes and its different types. Diabetes SA is currently recruiting people with diabetes to take part in a video to highlight the different aspects of diabetes which many people wouldn't know about.
