Acknowledging amazing fundraising efforts by Jarrod Tyermann

Munich for Matt

In February 2015, Jarrod set up a support page called 'Munich for Matt' with the aim to run the Munich Marathon in honour of his close friend Matt Graser, and to raise funds and awareness about diabetes complications.

We are very grateful that Jarrod chose Diabetes SA to be part of this journey. Diabetes SA is committed to provide education, information, support and products for people living with diabetes and their families.

Raising over $8,000

Jarrod set a goal to raise $3,000. As of today, the overall donations through his Everyday Hero profile exceeded $8,000. Additionally, Diabetes SA received donations in memory of Matt Graser of $1,277.15.

Being part of the journey

Read the article about why Jarrod decided to run the Munich Marathon.

One day before the event

Jarrod planned to arrive to Munich on Saturday 17 October and told us that the biggest challenge would be the weather and keeping warm as the forecast is for rain and 8°C. Jarrod kindly shared a video just before leaving London with the following message:

"Massive thank you to everyone that has shared our message running the Munich Marathon for our mate Matt Graser. Over $7k raised so far! So very thankful for everyone's support."

The Munich Marathon

At the start

Go team Jarrod! Jarrod's family and Matt's parents came to Munich to support his amazing cause. The marathon started at 10am which was about 6pm (ACST).

42 km in cold and rainy weather

Jarrod's and Matt's family kept us updated throughout the marathon, including posting footage of marathon participants running by. The atmosphere of the event was incredible, it was also very difficult to recognise, which of the runners was Jarrod. Click here to see the video.

Time to celebrate

We are sure that many people around the world raised a glass to celebrate Jarrod's success. Click here to see a video posted on our Facebook page and don't forget to leave a comment for Jarrod.

What it was like to run a marathon

Jarrod shared his thoughts about the event:

"Doing well. Still recovering from Sunday! Pretty sore after it was finished, it was a real challenge just to walk.

Here is a quick after event summary... Overall the marathon went well as the only goal was to finish. I finished in 4 hours and 10 minutes which I can be happy with given my goal was to run the marathon in 4 hours. It was a really great experience to run in such a picturesque city with lots of people lining the streets cheering everybody on. Running into the stadium was quite an overwhelming experience and it was fantastic to have my wife (Alex), my parents and Matt's parents there as well.

I must thank my wife for all of her support during this difficult time. It would not have been possible without her. I also want to thank everybody who donated or shared on social media. I also want to thank Matt's parents and my parents for making the journey to Munich to support me."

Touching people's hearts

Some of the beautiful comments about Jarrod's fundraising efforts included:

"Great to see you do this for Matt and Diabetes just be proud of why you are doing it Jarrod no matter where you get! 2 hearts forever xxx"

"So proud of you Jarrod!"

"You are amazing Jarrod"

Social media impact

It was fantastic to see the community getting involved on social media, 'MunichForMatt' updates had a lifetime total reach on Facebook and Twitter of over 11,037 impressions (including video views). We would like to thank all supporters who helped us spread the word about Jarrod's cause.

A big thank you

We would like to extend our gratitude for Jarrod's effort, generosity and kindness. It is through generosity, commitment and support from people like him that the awareness about diabetes reaches wider communities. Thank you Jarrod for your support for which we are very grateful.
