Welcome to the final edition of the Diabetes SA Healthe-News for 2015. Before you immerse yourself in Christmas festivities, we encourage you to have a look at the upcoming education sessions for 2016, including our Annual Food & Health Seminar.

Food and Health Seminar 2016 – Fats and Fads

The 2016 Food and Health Seminar will focus on 'fats and fads' with expert speakers discussing the importance of healthy fats in our diet and latest diet fads. There will also be a practical cooking demonstration.

Now is the time to start thinking about improving your knowledge and skills on various diabetes topics which can assist you with your self-management of your diabetes. Whether you have been recently diagnosed or have had diabetes for a while, we're here to help

Living Well with Type 2 Diabetes (3 Week Series)  NDSST2

Type2-Living-Well 

Especially for those newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and those who require an update on diabetes management. This series of education sessions is FREE to NDSS Registrants, and is facilitated by the Diabetes SA Health Services Team. It involves three education sessions delivered over three weeks. Please make sure you book and attend all three sessions.

Come and join our Dietitian for your tour around the supermarket aisles to learn about healthy eating, food products and label reading. This session is FREE to Diabetes SA members.

Meet Diabetes SA at the Adelaide Central Market where you will explore the abundant variety of fruit and vegetables that the Adelaide Central Market has to offer, sample fresh produce from the market and be provided with tips on healthy and cheap meals and snacks. The NDSS Diabetes in Pregnancy National Development Program has developed resources to help provide information for women with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who are planning a pregnancy now or in the future, including:

  • Pregnancy and Diabetes website, dedicated to pregnancy and diabetes information.
  • Having a healthy baby booklets providing comprehensive information on planning and managing pregnancy. Separate booklets are available for women with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Have you got private health insurance? 

The majority of large health funds may reimburse you full or part cost of membership to Diabetes SA and full or part cost of blood glucose meters and blood pressure monitors. Contact your health fund to determine your level of cover and what benefit may be available to you. Diabetes SA will provide you with a tax invoice to give to your health fund for reimbursement.

Celebrating first year of business operation

Twelve months later we have seen over 5000 donations received at the site and we are hoping for much more in the future.

World Diabetes Day

The theme for World Diabetes Day 2015 was 'act today to change tomorrow', highlighting the importance of healthy eating as a key factor in managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes to help avoid diabetes-related complications.

Celebrating World Diabetes Day

Diabetes SA joined the WDD campaign by:

A WDD seminar focused on 'Innovations in Type 1 Diabetes Management' was held at the Adelaide Convention Centre; and on Friday 13 November the Health Services Team headed to Rundle Mall to hand out the Australian Type 2 Diabetes Risk (AusDrisk) Assessment Tool for people to calculate their own risk.
