Diabetes SA has been delivering services to people with diabetes and their families since 1953. Supporting people living with diabetes is at the heart of everything we do. Diabetes SA is a not-for-profit member-based association.

Our mission is to educate, advocate, support, and fund research to provide better outcomes for people living with diabetes.

Our vision is to empower people to live well with diabetes and raise awareness for those at risk of diabetes in South Australia.

The Opportunity

Diabetes SA is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in South Australia; we are committed to providing culturally sensitive and appropriate health services and programs.

The Aboriginal Health Worker is pivotal in achieving the common objective to assist the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to take a strong role in managing their own health and lifestyles.

The Aboriginal Health Worker will work collaboratively with healthcare professionals, community members, and other stakeholders to address the unique healthcare needs of the Aboriginal population, with a focus on education about diabetes prevention and diabetes management.

You will be a driven, motivated, and passionate professional, with the following: 

  • Demonstrated experience working as an Aboriginal Health Worker or in a similar role within the healthcare sector is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of culturally appropriate healthcare practices and understanding of health and social issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing culturally-appropriate information resources and strategies to meet the needs of Aboriginal communities.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing and evaluating health programs and initiatives to Aboriginal communities.
  • Demonstrated experience of working in a team and with other service providers to achieve outcomes.
  • Experience and confidence in public speaking.
  • Experience using computer software, including Microsoft Outlook, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, organisational staff, and other providers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally, with a wide range of people from Aboriginal communities, government and other agencies, committees and other bodies.

Personal Abilities/Aptitudes

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with diverse individuals and communities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and adapt to changing healthcare environments.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and cultural competence.
  • Willingness to travel to remote or rural communities as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills to organise workload and meet deadlines.
